Christians and stewardship
I'm reading a book called Escape the Debt Trap by Dr. Kregg Hood. I've only read through the second chapter, but so far I am really impressed. My family is not really in a "debt trap"--I am actually reading it so that I can recommend it to someone who is facing financial problems--but I have already found valuable suggestions for life. The book is written from a Christian perspective and explains how Satan uses different schemes to draw us away from God. Dr. Hood deals with the financial aspect of this, but much of what he writes about can be applied to other areas of our lives.
As Christians, it is very important that we have a handle on our finances wisely. God expects us to be good stewards and this means much more than giving our tithe. It is about taking care of the blessings that God loans to us. It means acting responsibly with our money and our possessions. As I said before, my family is not in debt trouble. In fact, we have a pretty good cushion and we continue to save. But, I have come to realize that there are areas in which we can improve. Our minister said something in a sermon that really stuck with me: "There is a connection between handling money and spiritual depth." The way I handle my finances is a reflection of the depth of my relationship with God. I can't be letting my light shine for Him if I am foolish with my money. So, I will have to start taking a harder look at my spending and saving habits, and at my reasons for both. I would hate for something like money to come between me and God. Especially since He tells me that He will provide for my every need (Matthew 6:31-33).
I'm not sure where you can get a copy of this book. I received mine during a series at church. However, you might find a used copy here. You could also go to this web site--maybe your church would like to order a ministry kit. It is also possible that you could write or call the publishing company to request a copy. We went through the Dave Ramsey class last year and it changed the way we did a lot of things. all for the better.
I'm not familiar with the Dave Ramsey class. Can you tell more about it? My church had a Crown Ministries class, several years ago, although we did not take it because it was when our children were pretty young and we just did not have the time to dedicate to the class. I'm hoping they will do it again sometime.
