Redecorating

We've been working on redecorating the girls' room. It started out with the prospect of getting them some new furniture (actually, it's my old furniture from when I was growing up, but much nicer than what they had). So, we moved them into another room and gave away the old furniture. We decided that it would be a good time to paint, since the room was virtually empty. Well, Brian got to looking closely and discovered that, at one time, this room had wallpaper in it and that it had been painted over. Bleh! The wallpaper was starting to come loose at the seams, so we tried to take it off. This lasted about two to three hours before we decided that it just wasn't worth it. While the paper was coming up in some places, there were other places that were stuck so bad that it wasn't going to come off, and we were gouging the walls trying to remove it. Brian decided to just tear the sheetrock out, and replace it. I know, it sounds drastic, but we ended up having a much better surface to work with. Also, as Brian pointed out, it is possible that some of the older paint may have been lead based, so now it is all gone. So, the new sheetrock is up, walls are primed, and today, Brian put the base coat on. After it dried, I went to work. I had decided that I wanted to sponge paint in there. I figure it will be less likely to show all those kid fingerprints (at least I hope so!). Now, usually, we pick really exciting colors for our walls, like eggshell or ecru or cream. We really outdid ourselves this time, though...we picked vanilla cream for our base coat! For the other color, we picked cocoa mocha. Both are pretty much neutral colors...I just can't bring myself to paint something that we may get tired of in two years. Also, if the girls decide to change bedspreads or something, then it won't be so hard for them to find something. Anyway, I got two walls done with sponge painting, and it looks pretty good, if I do say so myself. Tomorrow, I will finish up with the painting. The girls are loving it and are so excited to be getting their room remodeled. Still to do is the trim for their windows and doors. We also want to get new closet doors for them. It has taken a bit longer than I had anticipated, but we are seeing an end to the project. It's worth it, though. And when we're done, we might even do the rest of the house!
